The Classic Fried Bologna Sandwich: A Simple and Scrumptious Treat

The fried bologna sandwich is a nostalgic comfort food enjoyed by many. This humble creation offers a delightful combination of crispy bologna, melty cheese, and fresh vegetables on soft bread. It's surprisingly quick and easy to make, perfect for a satisfying lunch or a light dinner.

Ingredients:

  • Thick-sliced bologna (ideally deli-sliced, not pre-packaged)
  • American cheese slices (or your favorite cheese)
  • Mayonnaise or mustard (or your preferred spread)
  • Tomato slices
  • Onion slices (optional)
  • White bread (or your favorite bread)
  • Cooking oil or butter
  • Salt and pepper (to taste)

Instructions:

  1. Heat the Pan: Heat a medium-sized skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. Add a thin layer of oil or butter to coat the pan.

  2. Prepare the Bologna: If using pre-packaged bologna, remove the waxy paper casing (red tip) before slicing. Deli-sliced bologna typically doesn't have a casing.

  3. Crisp the Bologna: Carefully place the bologna slices in the hot pan. You'll hear a sizzle as they cook. To prevent curling, use a fork to gently press down on the center of each slice after a minute or two of cooking.

  4. X Marks the Spot (Optional): Some people like to score the bologna with two diagonal cuts in the center (forming an X) before frying. This helps prevent the bologna from curling excessively.

  5. Golden Goodness: Fry the bologna for 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crispy around the edges. You can also cook it to your desired level of doneness.

  6. Building the Sandwich: While the bologna cooks, spread mayonnaise or mustard on one slice of bread. Add cheese slices to the other bread slice (or directly on top of the cooked bologna).

  7. Assemble and Enjoy: Once the bologna is cooked, remove it from the pan and place it on a paper towel to drain any excess oil. Assemble your sandwich by layering the fried bologna on top of the cheese, followed by tomato slices and onion slices (if using). Season with salt and pepper to taste.
